Crab Stuff

02:19 May 22 2010
Times Read: 641

I put a little dish of fruit bits in the crab tank tonight, and three little ones found it right away. The dish isn't big enough for all of them to get into it, so they are sort of circling it, taking a bite here, a nibble there, and going round and round. There are dried apples, mangos and cranberry bits, and they love all of them.

Now that it's a lot warmer, they have been more active. They regularly tip over the climbing logs every night. I bought them a bright day glo pink climbing stick that has holes all around it, and one day I saw two of them trying to climb it at the same time. They reached the top and what now? It was a stand off for awhile.

They have such fun with their toys and treats!

Corner Struggle

02:17 May 05 2010
Times Read: 669

It must be very important to little hermit crabs to be the one in the very corner of the tank. One little guy will wiggle in there, and along comes another one who wants that spot. The second one will crawl on top of the first one, and start rocking and rolling till he can get that bottom crab out of the coveted spot.

I sit here and watch this go on every night, and after several minutes they sort themselves out, one gets the corner, the others snuggle around the first one...and one even gets on top of the first one and settles down, content to share the spot.

I picked up a little one, amidst much antennae-waving and claw flailing, to teach him to walk in my hand. He did very well, and paused a little bit, so I brought him right up to my nose and praised him. Out came the biggest claw, and he very very gently reached out and tapped the tip of my nose.

A little crab moment.

Awww. The little baby chickens are like that, you can hear them rustling around and peeping until they get settled in.

Then, as a collective, they slowly sink to the ground and fall asleep.

Maybe you could construct a little throne for them, to see how long they can defend their throne..

Such personality in those crabs.
